Superman vs. Thor: Your Ultimate Guide To This Fight

Superman and Thor are mighty beings. While Thor is the God of Thunder in the Marvel Universe, Superman is no less powerful and considered a God of the DC Universe. Fans of these superheroes have been endlessly debating who would be the winner of a Superman vs. Thor competition. And after the successful debut of Thor in the MCU, this question has picked up even more heat.

So in this article, we will look at this ultimate comparison of these Gods from different universes. We will consider both the comics and the movies for this comparison and decide the winner if they ever get in a fight.

Superman

This section will look at Superman’s history, powers, and weaknesses.

History

Superman came to Earth after his father Jor-El launched him in a spaceship to Earth and saved him from Krypton’s destruction. He was adopted by the Kents and was raised with very high morals and ideals. This parenting by the Kents plays an integral part in Superman’s life. The teachings of his parents impact all the decisions he makes. He was taught to value life and high morals, making him incorruptible.

This is the reason he has never craved anything in his life. Even after he becomes Superman, he still lives like an ordinary human being who goes to the supermarket for groceries and has never thought of using his powers for his own personal gain, let alone using them.

Powers

Superman has an unending list of superpowers and has achieved feats that no one can even dream of. He is the person that inspired the superhero genre, so it is only fair that he has some of the most extraordinary achievements to his name. The pre-crisis Superman was so powerful that he could hit planets into the rotation and even reverse time at his will.

However, the latest iteration of the superhero is still powerful, but his powers have been toned down somewhat. The reason behind this is that the earlier writers considered Superman the main character. At the same time, Clark Kent was the persona, while the later writers started considering Clark as the main character who adopted the Superman persona to protect his people. This was done to make the character more relatable, and Superman became “a man trying to do the right thing” instead of the all-knowing superhero from the Golden and Silver age.

Clark still is one of the most powerful superheroes and has freeze breath, heat vision, powerful punches, and unimaginable strength. Furthermore, he even held a black hole in the palm of his hand.

Weaknesses

There are very few things that can slow Superman down. These weaknesses are Krypton and Magic. Unfortunately, both these things can weaken Superman.

Thor

This section will look at Superman’s history, powers, and weaknesses.

History

Thor is the son of the mighty Odin and the prince of Asgard. Unfortunately, he never had a lesson in humility, and for this reason, Odin decided to send him to Earth, erasing his memories and stripping him of Mjolnir. The origin of Thor in the MCU was also loosely based on this. He was stripped of all his powers and banished to Earth as a punishment for attacking Jotunheim and breaking the peace pact between Asgard and Jotunheim.

Powers

He is the God of Thunder and uses powerful weapons such as Mjolnir and Stormbreaker to channel his energy. However, his feats of strength are more prominent in the comics as he destroyed an entire planet during his fight with Beta-Ray Bill. He even punched down Galactus and the Phoenix Force, entities of universal cosmic strength in the Marvel Universe.

The version of Thor that we see in MCU has taken a different route and has been more focussed on being a part of the Team in Avengers rather than taking down the enemy with his raw strength. One of the most criticized points in Thor: Ragnarok was also when Thor was subdued with a small electric shock and captured and sold off on the planet of Sakaar. The fans quickly criticized how a minuscule electric shock can neutralize the God of Thunder. However, Thor is still a powerful character, as we see later in Ragnarok when he realizes his true power.

Weaknesses

Thor has no apparent weakness in the comics or even in movies. The competition comes down to power. Thor has been killed by beings more powerful than himself in the comics. So, the Superman vs. Thor competition also comes down to strength.

Superman vs. Thor Verdict

In our opinion, there is no competition between Thor and Superman as both of them are from different universes. Furthermore, DC Universe is famous for greater-than-life God-like characters, whereas Marvel does not have such characters in large numbers. So, Superman alone has taken down villains more potent than the entire team of Avengers has failed to do so.

Superman fights by restraining himself and very rarely utilizes his true potential. While Thor, in the MCU, could not take on Hela. Superman beats Darkseid regularly, while Thor could not win from Thanos even with his team in the Avengers saga.

So, any competition between them would result in Superman eventually overpowering the God of Thunder because of his raw strength. Even in the 2003 JLA/Avengers crossover comic book series, Superman quickly beat Thor. Thor relies on Mjolnir, and if anyone is worthy in the DC Universe, then that is Superman. So, he can hypothetically neutralize Mjolnir before defeating Thor with just raw strength alone.
