The Black Panther is one of the most popular superheroes of recent time. Although he has long been famous among comics fans since his first appearance in 1960. But, his popularity reached new heights when the Wakandan warrior made it to the big screen in 2018 with his flagship movie. However, this is not the first time T’Challa appeared on the screen. Black Panther made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War (2016).
Chadwick Boseman brings Marvel Comics’ first black superhero to life on the big screen with the other Avengers. While he was not at the movie’s start, he certainly played an integral role. Moreover, this role made his mark as a superhero in future films.
Captain America: Civil War
The movie’s plot revolves around the division of Avengers into two opposing groups. One group was led by Steve Rogers and the other by Tony Stark. After the defeat of Ultron, resulting in Sokovia’s devastation, the government decides to pass the Sokovia Accords. The purpose of this law is to control and regulate the actions of Avengers. Tony Stark supports the government’s decision as he feels guilty following the creation of Ultron and Sokovia’s destruction caused by it. However, Steve Rogers believes that if Avengers sign the Sokovia Accords, politicians can use them for their benefit. Hence the Avengers divide into team Cap and Team Stark.
Entry of Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War
Helmut Zemo, a colonel of the Sokovian commando unit whose family died in the Sokovian disaster, is on a revenge spree. Meanwhile, from the old Hydra records, he finds that Bucky, who is a brainwashed winter soldier under the influence of Hydra, murdered Tony Stark’s parents. So he plans to cause a rift between Avengers using this information because Bucky and Captain America were childhood friends.
At a UN conference in Vienna where the Accords are to be ratified, a bomb explosion occurs. Zemo plants this explosion in disguise as Bucky Barnes to misguide everyone. It also kills King T’Chaka of Wakanda, among many other casualties. Since the security footage indicates the bomber as Barnes. Prince T’Chala, who is the son of T’Chaka and the next king of Wakanda, vows to kill Bucky and avenge his father’s death.
When Captain learns that authorities have the intention to kill Barnes, he decides to try to bring in Barnes. However, at the moment, T’Challa makes his first appearance as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War movie. Geared up in a vibranium suit, Black Panther chases Bucky to kill him, whereas Captain tries to save his old friend. Nonetheless, all three of them are apprehended by the police for breaking the law.
Team Stark vs. Team captain
Black Panther joins Team Stark for revenge. Because he believed that Winter Soldier was responsible for his father’s death in the terrorist bombing. Moreover, Captain sided with Bucky. Since T’Challa and his father were supporters of the accountability of superheroes, he sided with Tony. Another reason was keeping the technological advancements of Wakanda a secret. Since Sokovia Accords make sure that no hero can take action in any other country without permission. Captain refused to sign the Sokovia Accords, which compelled Black Panther to join team Stark because he thought he was standing for what was right.
Zemo wants to finish the winter soldiers and Avengers, considering them a threat to humanity. He controls Barnes to get the information about remaining winter soldiers at the Siberian Hyrda base. When Captain gets to know the intentions of Zemo, he and Bucky go to Siberia to capture Zemo. At the same time, a team of remaining Avengers under Tony Stark’s command goes to capture the renegade Avengers. However, when he realizes the truth, he flies to help Captain. Black Panther secretly follows Tony in his jet as he wants to find Bucky.
There Tony Stark gets to know that Bucky killed his parents. Since Captain knows this secret, Tony becomes enraged with Rogers leading to an intense fight between Tony, Rogers, and Bucky. To kill Bucky, Iron Man destroys his robotic arm. Whereas, to stop Tony, Captain disables Stark’s armor. Zemo feels satisfied that he has avenged his family by causing a rift among the Avengers.
Final Revenge
Zemo tries to take his own life. However, T’Challa intervenes and takes him to authorities because he thinks living is not done yet with Zemo. T’Challa does not kill Zemo himself because he understands that revenge and the pain of loved ones can make people do wrong things. Moreover, T’Challa is a dutiful man with a good heart. He also realized that he was so blinded by revenge that he almost killed the wrong man. After meeting with Zemo and listening to his reasoning, he was no longer filled with vengeance. He let go of his revenge for the right thing.
