Batman’s is never complete without his cape and cowls (except for Batman Beyond, of course). The cape was designed to create anonymity of his real body and also aid his crime-fighting. The cape gives him the bat structure and protects him from fire damages, gunshots, and attacks. In Batman Begins, his cape is made of memory fiber, which makes it stiffens and gives a wing-like structure when applied to it. The cape serves several reasons and purposes, some of which includes;
- The cape gives him to flight and maneuvering abilities. What’s a bat without wings? And what’s “Batman” without his cape? If Batman is really going to don the bat motif, then he definitely needs wings. Bob Kane’s initial sketch of Batman was with wings instead of a cape. After talking to his colleague, Bill’s finger, he thought wings would be too “cumbersome,” and so came the innovation of a flying cape. See also: Original inspiration behind Batman cape.
- The cape protects him. The super Power of Batman is his focus and determination. He is, however, still human and very much susceptible to gunshots, attacks, and falling. The cape helps to cover him when enemies aim at him, helping him escape and be easily missed.
- The cape helps him to stay under the guise of darkness. The cape’s black and grey color helps him blend with darkness, making him barely noticeable and magical.
- The cape serves as a defense weapon. In some versions, the cape consists of razor-sharp blades, which enable him to defend himself against attacks.
